Nick's Power supply buying guide...

There are so many varieties of computer power supplies on the market today. Prices range from $10 all the way to $200+!!! Some computer hardware configurations only need $20 invested in the power supply while others need around $75 or higher. Here's how I select my power supplies... I never buy power supplies under $18 unless they're on sale. Power supplies at this price I'll usually integrate into an older system such as a Pentium 4 Northwood based system or older. In a newer system, such as an AMD Athlon 64 I'll shell out some extra dollars for a power supply, usually in the $27-$45 range. If the system is going to be used hard such as a server or any other computer that gets a lot of stress, I'll pay around $75 for a power supply that has 100% reliable build quality. Cheap power supplies are good for older Pentium 4 or Athlon XP systems. The MTDX Black Max has a CoolMax V-400 power supply in it that's about 2 years old. It has run Socket 478 systems ever since it was new. This Power Supply was only $25. The Price doesn't always mean bad quality!!! If you are like me when you are out looking for parts for a new build, you will be looking for the best (price-quality) ratio on everything you buy. The power supply is a good example of this. If you are on a tight budget, you can still get a decent power supply without shelling out major dollars. The best way to find a great priced PSU is to go to an online retailer such as newegg.com (I highly recommend this site, they have some of the best service around!!!) Go to the PSU selection on the site. Choose a low price range (example: $10-$40). Browse through the products. Look at the percentage of 4 and 5 star reviews. If it is high, it may be a good product. If there are a lot of 1/2 star reviews, It would be best to stay away from the product. Look at the reviews page to get full detail. This will inform you how other buyer's experiences are with the product. This is the best way to find the best price on a great power supply. The PSU in the MTDX is a @-POWER (Dynapower USA) power supply that was bought off of newegg for only $19.99! The overall quality of this PSU is in the 30-50 dollar range. It has atleast 71% 5 star review ratings.
